Fix Slow Home Wi-Fi Without Spending a Cent: The 30-Minute Checklist
Before you buy a new router, run this checklist. In our experience, most “slow Wi-Fi” complaints are fixed by placement, settings and a reboot — not hardware. Thirty minutes and a ladder, and you’ll know exactly what your problem is.
The method
Work top to bottom, 5 minutes each. Fix → test → move on. Don’t skip to “buy a router” until every free fix is done, because the #1 pattern we see is people buying an expensive router for a problem caused by a corner-of-the-basement modem.
Check 1 — Reboot the whole chain, in order
Modem → router → devices. Unplug for 30 seconds, power on the modem first, wait for it to sync, then the router. This clears the most common failure mode of all: a router that’s been up for months with a full NAT table and half-allocated channels. Do this quarterly even if nothing is wrong.
Check 2 — Firmware and settings hygiene
Log into your router’s admin page and check:
- Firmware up to date — routers rarely auto-update well. A year of patches matters for both speed and security.
- QoS / traffic shaping off — unless you configured it deliberately, most built-in QoS slows things down.
- Band steering on — lets the router move devices between 2.4 and 5 GHz automatically. If your router misbehaves, see Check 3.
Check 3 — Split the bands and use 5 GHz for everything that can
Your 2.4 GHz band is for range; 5 GHz (and 6 GHz on newer routers) is for speed. If band steering is flaky — the classic symptom is your phone stuck at 2.4 GHz right next to the router — give the 5 GHz band its own SSID (e.g. Home-5G) and connect your laptops, phones and TVs to it manually.
Check 4 — Placement: the single biggest free fix
The router’s antenna pattern is roughly a donut, and walls are the enemy. Rules that matter more than any setting:
- Elevate it — on a shelf, not the floor, not behind a TV or in a cabinet.
- Center it — the middle of the living space, not the corner of the house.
- Keep 1–2 m of clear space — away from metal (fridges, foil-backed insulation), water (fish tanks, pipes) and big electronics that emit RF noise (microwaves, some soundbars).
- Orient antennas vertically, and spread them differently if there are two or more.
The “I can’t move it” case: your modem is where the ISP put it. Then the answer is a long Ethernet cable to a better-positioned router or an access point — a $20 cable usually beats a $300 router.
Check 5 — Kill the interference sources

If your router lets you pick a channel manually, on 2.4 GHz try 1, 6 or 11 (they don’t overlap) and pick whichever is quietest. On 5/6 GHz, auto is usually fine.
Check 6 — Measure before and after, properly
A speed test to the internet tells you about your internet plan, not your Wi-Fi. To test your Wi-Fi specifically:
- Run a speed test on Ethernet (laptop plugged into the router). That’s your baseline.
- Run the same test over Wi-Fi in the problem room, same time of day.
- If Ethernet is fast and Wi-Fi is slow → it’s a Wi-Fi problem; keep working the checklist.
- If both are slow → it’s your internet plan or ISP, and no router on earth fixes it.
For LAN testing (NAS transfers, local streaming), use iPerf between two computers — it isolates local network speed from the internet completely.
Check 7 — Give the heavy users a wire
Anything that never moves should be on Ethernet: desktop, TV, game console, and especially mesh nodes or access points. Every device you take off Wi-Fi frees spectrum for the ones that genuinely need it. A cheap switch plus a few cables transforms an apartment that “has bad Wi-Fi” into one where the Wi-Fi was never the problem.
Check 8 — Check the client, not just the router
One phone on a bad case with its antenna covered can look like a network-wide problem. Test with a second device before blaming the network. Also update device drivers and OS — Wi-Fi driver bugs are real and common.
Check 9 — Measure the room, not the router
Use a free Wi-Fi analyzer app (WiFiAnalyzer on Android, or the AirPort Utility/inSSIDer class of tools) and walk the house. You’re looking for:
- Low signal in specific rooms → placement problem (Check 4) or a mesh need.
- Many networks on the same channel → channel problem (Check 5).
- Big signal differences between two spots that are close → interference or wall type.
When it is time to spend money
The checklist is done and the result table is honest:

Reboot, update, split the bands, move the router up and center, kill interference, and measure wired vs wireless before you spend anything. Nine free fixes out of ten cases — and when it is hardware, you’ll finally know which hardware because you measured the problem instead of guessing at it.
